Todrick Hall's Fairy Tale R&B Mash-up is All That and More (aka 90's Disney Nostalgia)

Here's a video that went viral this week - reminding everyone of the fairy tale "golden age" of Disney of the 90's - but with an R&B feel and hooks from other pop songs thrown in there to mix it up a little. The costumes are cute tribute updates too. Clearly Todrick Hall had a lot of fun with this.

This is much better done than I expected and the Aladdin tribute it finishes with is fantastic. Just try and keep your feet still. (And boy can Shoshana Bean sing!) Take a look:
Todrick Hall has become (very) famous for his edgy takes on Disney songs, tales and characters - most of them being fairy tales. His 'revisionist' takes (there's that word again!) are incredibly popular and create a lot of conversation about fairy tales and how they're told today. (So much so, I think it's about time I gave him his own tag!) His Cell Block Tango mixing Chicago's amazing murderesses sequence with Disney villains was inspired. I'll link you in case you missed it. HERE.

Fairy Tale Villains Do the "Spell Block Tango"

Todrick Hall's "Spell Block Tango"
Note: I meant to post this yesterday but time got away from me, (I always wish I could clone myself a few times during Halloween week!), so apologies for not alerting you before it went viral.

This is another musical gem from Todrick Hall*, creator of Cinderonce, and is very fun. Not only is it extremely well done, it's great to hear the villainess' (ahem, including Scar) "arguing their POV", Chicago style. It's in perfect keeping with the current trend of retelling stories from the villains point of view (and it makes me want to see Chicago re-done with fairy tale characters).

The lyrics have been adjusted for each character and the Queen of Hearts' plea of "not guilty" is priceless.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, The Spell Block Tango.

Enjoy.

Kind of genius, really. I can't wait to see what Todrick Hall will do next!

A former American Idol finalist turned actor and filmmaker, Hall has become known for his YouTube videos that combine show tunes or Top-40 hits with popular culture, such as his video "Cinderonce", which told the story of Cinderella using only Beyoncé songs.

"Cinderonce" Is Going Viral

I never know what to expect will turn up in fairy tale news and today is one of those days. This is one of the about-to-go-viral stories of the day:  Cinderonce - Cinderella Reimagined Via Beyonce Hits by Todrick Hall

Todrick Hall (YouTube sensation and American Idol finalist) is making a habit of retelling fairy tales and the just-released Cinderonce is no exception.

Tracking the rag-to-riches storyline through Sasha Fierce (ie Beyonce) hits like "Diva," "Countdown," and "Single Ladies," this brilliant reappropriation of a timeless Disney fairytale will have you gagging for more...

Featuring Shangela as Cinderella's own personal fairy drag-mother, Tiffany Daniels as Cinderella and Todrick (who apparently adds his pipes to Beyonce tracks) as the Prince, this is actually a lot of fun! Take a look:
The other Disney based  "reimaginings" to date are Beauty & the Beat and Cinderfella. Check them out below:

Beauty & the Beat  (think Belle in the Hood). This is hilarious and very much in line with "Somewhere Over the Ghetto":

CinderFella (a musical montage and gay take on Cinderella):

One more side note: Todrick made a "trailer" for the Cinderonce music video before it came out and really hit the suspense notes. It's worth seeing just to take a look at how he condensed the set-up for the Cinderella tale into a buzz-building 20 second suspense marketing piece (note: it may auto-play the next video so hit pause if you've had your Toddy-fill for the day):

What's next in fairy tale news? Stay tuned.
